The first International LLM Fair, organized by Uniandes and the Law Schools Global League (LSGL), featured the participation of 15 universities. This event provided an opportunity for Uniandes students and others to explore the academic offerings available through LSGL, one of the world’s leading networks of law faculties, of which Uniandes Law School is a member.
Deans from law schools in countries such as Brazil, Mexico, England, Italy, Argentina, Australia, and others attended the fair, gaining insights into global trends in legal education and professional development opportunities.
“We clearly noticed that students are very interested in programs that allow them to continue their research, make changes or shifts in different specialties, and, of course, programs that provide tools to approach global social issues from a legal perspective,” highlighted Ana María Zorrilla Noriega, Director of the Law Program at ITAM (Mexico).
These themes were central during the LSGL members annual meeting, held for the first time in Colombia, alongside the academic offerings showcased at the fair. Discussions also revolved around the challenges facing global legal education. There was a strong consensus on the need for a global outlook to equip new generations of lawyers to address worldwide legal needs, including pressing issues like environmental crises and migrations.
“We are dealing with a global context with many fronts. However, solving serious global problems still requires not just a local perspective but a global view, such as climate issues or technology. This underscores the importance of discussing and understanding what is essential, how curricula should be revised, the structure of law schools, and even rethinking how we train the new professionals. This is what students are seeking and what global issues demand,” emphasized Oscar Vilhena Vieira, Dean of the Law School at FGV São Paulo.
The LSGL 2024 meeting in Colombia, the first of its kind, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the League and Uniandes. It featured a summer school, the LLM Fair, academic meetings, expert panels, and other activities.
